Discourse specialist/Discourse Administrator/Automation & Support
We are looking for a technically savvy Discourse Administrator to manage and optimize our Discourse community platform. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Discourse, a solid understanding of community management, and an interest in automation and integrations.
Key Responsibilities
Ongoing Technical Maintenance
Set up and manage regular content snapshots for backup and disaster recovery
Handle user-level support issues (e.g., username changes, topic organization)
Perform site appearance updates (themes, logos, colors, layout tweaks)
Manage Discourse package/plugin updates within plan limitations
Implement and maintain approved integrations (e.g., email services, CRM, etc.)
Announcements & Notification Setup
Create and manage a dedicated announcements category (admin-only posting)
Configure default notification settings (e.g., ‘watch first post’ for all users)
Apply retroactive notification defaults to existing users
Configure email digest frequency, mailing list mode, and user export for external email platforms (e.g., HubSpot)
Push Notification Setup
Ensure proper integration with the Discourse Hub mobile app
Configure and test browser-based push notifications
AI Chatbot & Automation Support
Support or advise integration of a Discourse-compatible chatbot plugin
Collaborate on implementing AI-powered triage features (automated support routing, documentation-based replies)
Spam Prevention & Moderation
Enable and configure Akismet or similar anti-spam tools
Set up trust-level based permissions to reduce spam exposure
Coordinate proactive content moderation workflows with moderators
Enhanced Documentation & Support Content
Configure and optimize the Discourse Docs plugin
Ensure documentation can be embedded or referenced in chatbot responses
User Engagement & Onboarding
Improve onboarding using Discobot tutorials and flows
Customize and maintain badging/recognition systems to reward participation
Skills & Qualifications
Proven experience with Discourse platform (admin or developer level, ideally hosted version)
Strong understanding of community management best practices
Familiarity with Discourse plugin ecosystem and limitations of hosted plans
Some exposure to AI tools, chatbot integrations, or RAG architecture is a plus
Ability to handle basic HTML/CSS customization
Experience with email tools (HubSpot, Mailchimp, etc.) and basic data export/import tasks
Excellent troubleshooting, communication, and documentation skills
Nice-to-Haves
Familiarity with APIs or webhooks in the Discourse environment
Experience with open-source community moderation
Interest or experience in user support automation or AI-driven tools
