Book Journey
The character creation process consists of several stages, each of which helps to shape its unique image and endow it with individual traits. Here are the main stages involved in character development:
1. Research and Inspiration
- At this stage, the goals of character creation are defined: who they are, for which project, and what their role in the plot is.
- References and ideas are collected. These can be photographs, illustrations, images from movies, descriptions from books. References help to better understand the style, appearance, emotions, and characteristics of the character.
2. Development of the Character Concept
- This includes describing the character's personality, their backstory, main behavioral traits, facial expressions, and gestures. For example, whether they are cheerful, brave, mysterious, or melancholic.
- Physical characteristics are also defined: age, height, body type, hairstyle, clothing style.
3. Creation of Sketches
- The search for the form and image of the character begins through sketches. At this stage, quick drafts with various options for face shape, figure, pose, hairstyle, and clothing are created.
- The main goal is to find the most successful silhouette and proportions that will distinctly convey the character's personality.
4. Detailing
- The chosen sketch is refined and developed further. All details are drawn, such as facial features, clothing folds, hair and skin texture, accessories.
- At this stage, color variations of the character appear. It is important to select a palette that emphasizes their mood and character.
5. Finalization and Clean Drawing
- After the details are approved, a clean drawing of the character is created, where all elements are worked out at a high level of detail.
- Textures, shadows, and lighting are added to give the character volume and depth.
6. Development of Facial Expressions and Poses
- For a deeper understanding of the character, separate sketches with various facial expressions (joy, sadness, anger, etc.) are created.
- Different poses and movements are drawn to show how the character interacts with their environment.
7. Testing in Context
- At this stage, the character is "inserted" into the context of the future project, for example, in scenes of a book or comic. It is checked how organically they look alongside other characters and in the environment.
- This helps to understand if anything else needs to be changed in the character's appearance before finalizing their image.
8. Final Render and Preparation for Use
- After making the final adjustments, the final version of the character is created, ready for use in the project.
- The character can be presented as a static illustration or prepared for animation if movement is planned.
9. Delivery of Materials to the Client
- If the character is developed for a client, the prepared files and materials (drawings, sketches, descriptions) are delivered to the client along with the rights for use.
This character creation process ensures harmony between the appearance, inner world of the character, and their function in the story or project.
