Janus (Latin Ianus) is considered the oldest among the Roman gods, and therefore embodies the beginning and the end, the entrance and the exit, order from chaos. Has two faces: one looks to the east, the other - to the west, so he knows everything that happened in the past, and what will happen in the future.
