Redesign and technical update of the website "Kanapka"
Web ProgrammingThe project encompassed not only a visual update of the website but also a complete overhaul of its technical foundation. The task was to preserve the existing catalog, content, and WooCommerce functionality while making the site more modern, faster, more stable, and easier to maintain in the future.
What was before the redesign
The site was running on an outdated WordPress theme that no longer met modern design, responsiveness, and performance requirements. A significant portion of the functionality was distributed among a large number of plugins, third-party modules, and outdated code fragments.
This created a number of problems:
* outdated design and overloaded interface;
* poor adaptation to modern mobile devices;
* dependence on a large number of plugins;
* conflicts and duplication of functionality;
* unnecessary CSS and JavaScript files;
* a large number of database queries;
* complicated updates of WordPress, PHP, and WooCommerce;
* performance and stability issues;
* difficulty in further site maintenance.
Due to years of modifications, the site had effectively turned into a system where even small changes could impact other modules.
What was done
A new lightweight custom WordPress theme was developed for the site without using heavy builders and universal templates.
The theme structure was created specifically for the real tasks of the "Kanapka" site: product catalog, categories, product pages, catering services, informational pages, cart, and order processing.
Main works:
* completely updated visual style;
* created modern responsive layout;
* redesigned the homepage and key templates;
* updated navigation, header, and mobile menu;
* modernized the catalog and product cards;
* improved the structure of service pages;
* optimized interaction with WooCommerce;
* removed unnecessary plugins and duplicates of functionality;
* necessary features were transferred directly into the theme;
* cleaned up outdated styles, scripts, and technical dependencies;
* configured responsive images and modern WebP formats;
* optimized loading of CSS, JavaScript, and fonts;
* set up long-term browser caching of static files;
* conducted the migration of the site to new hosting;
* updated server environment and PHP configuration;
* checked SSL, DNS, database, and subdomain functionality.
Result after the redesign
After the update, the site received a clean and controlled architecture. Instead of the old theme with a large number of dependencies, a custom lightweight theme is now used, retaining only the functionality necessary for the project.
The number of plugins has been minimized. Plugins are used only where truly justified: WooCommerce, SEO, forms, translations, and specific specialized integrations.
As a result, the site became:
* more modern visually;
* faster on mobile devices and desktop;
* more stable under load;
* easier to maintain;
* safer for future updates;
* less dependent on third-party plugins;
* prepared for further development of the catalog and functionality.
The PageSpeed performance score for the mobile version after optimization reaches approximately 97 points, while the Accessibility and Best Practices scores are around 96–100 points.
The main result is that the site not only received a new appearance. Its technical foundation was completely updated, allowing for future changes to be implemented faster, safer, and without the need to constantly deal with accumulated issues of the old system.
