What is autoimmune thyroiditis and what are the main symptoms?

Autoimmune thyroiditis, also known as Hashimoto's disease, is a chronic condition of the thyroid gland. In this condition, the body's immune system mistakenly identifies healthy cells of the thyroid gland as foreign and attacks them. This leads to inflammation and gradual destruction of the thyroid gland, which in turn causes a decrease in its function.
