Below you will find some general advice on writing analytical essay.
Analytical essay is one of the most challenging essays to write, but mastering its technique is very important. An analytical essay is not a summary of the work. If you find yourself paraphrasing parts of the object of your investigation (a piece of literature, economic event, etc.) or "retelling the story," then you are not writing an analytical essay. The key to understanding its nature is in the word "analyze. Analytical essays provide a reasoned response to a particular question and are organized around a singular logical argument based on evidence. The key to writing any successful analytic essay involves planning and research.
Tips for Writing an Analytical Essay
If you have a choice, always choose to investigate something that inspires, fascinates, or speaks to you. You do not have to fully understand it, but if you are pulled by your interest into the work, you will be more motivated to figure out how the puzzle fits together.
Isolate and analyze the question you will answer in your essay. Focus on specific words and phrases that alter or clarify the question. Find the scope of your essay.
It's important to narrow down your focus into something you can work with, rather than just weakly addressing a general theme. Define the parameters yourself by limiting your response to a specific angle.
Research your topic. Every analytical essay is essentially a commentary on someone else's work. This means that an effective analytical essay writer is someone who is able to read and understand the source material exceptionally well. As such, read up on your subject. You can use books, the Internet or both, according to instructions, but keep notes and pay attention to what you find. Going to the library and checking out reference material on the subject is a good idea so you can spend time sifting through the information to get the important details of your subject.
Create a summary or list of facts that you know about the subject of your analysis. If analyzing a piece of literature, write a summary. If writing about a concrete object, create a list of characteristics and known facts. This will help you determine whether or not you fully understand the subject you are analyzing. The key to an analytical essay is being able to break down the subject into constituent parts which can then be analyzed. The subject of the essay can be just about anything, such as people, events, a theme in a book or even an idea. Use specific and relevant examples and arguments. You need to include these to make your essay strong and substantial.
Maintain good form. You'll want to follow such essential rules as including an introduction, body and conclusion, as well as a thesis statement that guides readers toward your ultimate statement.
Double check spelling, grammar and punctuation. These are important in any piece of writing. A polished result lends to your professional image. Poor and sloppy construction, on the other hand, can lead to points off or a less enthusiastic reader.
Analytical Essay Outline
All assignments must have the following structure:
I. Title page: A separate page with the title and the author’s name on it.
II. Introduction (1 paragraph)
Identify the topic you will analyze and determine why this issue or problem is important.
Mention the academic paper(s) you read
Provide a thesis statement.
III-VI. Body Paragraphs (2-4 paragraphs)
Each Body Paragraph should contain a topic sentence that supports some aspect of your thesis.
Use supporting points, at least four or five, to underscore your main idea in this paragraph. Use quotes and brief paraphrasing from the work or facts from outside sources to further support your point of view. Conclude with a sentence that wraps up the discussion of this point and do not return to discuss it again until your conclusion. Try not to draw a conclusion that you have not broken down step by step.
Create a bridge between paragraphs, stating how each idea is ultimately connected and why the order of evidence is as such.
Feel free to use equations, graphs, charts, etc.
Data: Look for data, and answer the following: What data will you need to study your topic? How will you collect it? Be specific. Make sure there are sufficient data to draw a conclusion. For example, for a long run analysis in time series, there must be at least 15 years of available data.
VII. Conclusion (1 paragraph)
Tie all of your ideas back to original thesis. Always express your points in different words than you have used earlier.
Be sure your conclusion gives the reader a sense of finality and completeness.
Leave the reader with a clear picture in his/her mind.
VIII. Appendix: Graphs, charts, and mathematical derivations can be added in appendix.
An Analytical Essay Structure
Introduction: (1 paragraph)
Write a strong introduction paragraph with an "attention-getter" as the first sentence in order to ensure that you captivate your audience. The attention-getter can be a quote from the movie or book that your paper is about. It can also be an interesting, little-known fact.
Develop a strong thesis statement to be included in your introduction paragraph. A thesis statement is a concise sentence that outlines precisely what the main argument of your essay is. The thesis statement is going to be the main idea or position that the remainder of your essay is going to support. It is important that this position be an opinion rather than a fact, since it must be something that can be argued both for and against
For instance, your thesis statement might say: "The rising price of energy has added costs to daily commutes, has curtailed frivolous trips, and has increased grocery bills" or “Hybrid cars that use both gasoline and electricity would decrease our country’s dependence on foreign oil”. Ideally, this statement should be made at the end of your introductory paragraph.
What makes an effective thesis statement:
What a thesis statement is not: | An effective thesis statement has three characteristics: |
It is not the title of your essay It is not an announcement of your intent It is not a statement of fact It is not a mere description of your subject | It clearly expresses your paper’s main idea. It communicates your essay’s purpose. It is clearly worded. |
Body: 2-4 paragraphs
Write your main body paragraphs, focusing on a different aspects of your analysis in each paragraph. It is imperative that the body paragraphs of your analytical research essay are well constructed and organized. If they are not organized properly and you try to discuss too many topics in one paragraph, you may lose the attention of your reader.
The opening sentence of each paragraph must show how the materials of the paragraph relate to the thesis. This way you avoid entering irrelevant information and help your audience understand the importance of each paragraph. The information you include in each paragraph must be based on logic, evidence and analysis, and not on personal interpretations. All arguments for your explanation should be supported by empirical evidence. Depending on the subject of your essay, your evidence will come from field research, written materials or other data resources.
Another element analytical essay writers must be aware of is smooth transition from one paragraph to another. This is possible with a short sentence at the end of each paragraph acting as a prelude to the next. Transition sentences help you keep a smooth structure, linking every paragraph with each other and the thesis.
Conclusion 1 paragraph
Summarize your findings with a strong conclusion paragraph. Your conclusion paragraph should include your thesis statement, which will help tie together your entire essay. This is where you drive home the point of your thesis by reiterating what you have already said throughout your previous four paragraphs. However, the concluding paragraph must not just reiterate the thesis, but enhance it based on new knowledge acquired by reading the main section of the essay. Furthermore, the conclusion of an analytical essay is not the place to bring new ideas or leave ambiguous remarks.
Cite your work. A research paper almost always requires a Works Cited page, where you give credit to those works that you used in your research. This section is extremely important, as it will help make sure you avoid plagiarism, which is a very serious offense.
Plagiarism
This involves passing off anyone else’s work as your own, and includes copying a whole paper or parts of it and claiming it as your own work. If you use any other person’s work, words, or ideas, you must cite and acknowledge the sources.
Research presentation instructions
Each student will give a formal, 7 minute / 7 slide presentation on the research paper.
Obviously you will not have finished all of your research or reached all of your conclusions by the time of this presentation. This presentation asks you not to present your final conclusions, but rather to provide a snapshot of your thinking at this stage in the research process.
The goals of this presentation are threefold:
To make you begin shaping your thinking on the research question for presentation to a familiar audience.
To give you practice in thinking about your topic from the audience’s perspective—i.e. about what makes this research problem interesting or significant.
To let you solicit feedback from the audience on your research methodology, style of presentation, consequences of your preliminary conclusions, important peripheral questions, interesting counterarguments, and anything else that your presentation brings to mind.
Each presentation should include the following elements:
Introduction
Tell us what the topic is and why it’s interesting—to you, to us, and to the world at large
Research methodology
This section is an opportunity for you to explain how you are gathering and processing information on your topic and why you chose to gather and evaluate information the way you did. If you’ve had trouble finding information, mention this. You should also mention whether you’ve discovered certain schools of thought on your topic.
An account of any preliminary findings
Obviously you won’t have finished your research by the time of the presentation. This discussion of your preliminary findings should be designed to spark questions from your audience and should focus on the following
Trends you’ve noticed
Surprising discoveries
Preliminary conclusions you’re drawing
Questions for the audience
This is your opportunity to get real and substantial help on your research. Make the most of it! You’ll find that you receive the greatest benefit if you make your questions to the audience as specific as possible. Highlight what you see as the weakest points in your research or argument and ask for suggestions.
Be ready to answer the following questions:
What deep and thought-provoking questions does your essay raise?
How can you connect this essay, its facts and arguments to the current trends in the world economy?
