Analysis of COPD mortality rates in the USA and Uganda
The aim of this study was to compare the mortality rates from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the United States and Uganda for the year 2019. I used data on age-standardized mortality rates from COPD and population distribution by age groups.
For population data, I used the United Nations World Population Prospects dataset.
… The analysis revealed a significantly higher overall mortality rate (CDR) in the USA (57.2) compared to Uganda (5.8). This difference is likely influenced by factors such as better diagnosis in the USA, different risk factors, and an older population in the USA.
However, after adjusting for age structure using age-standardized death rates (ASDR), the rates were as follows: 28.4 for the USA and 28.7 for Uganda. This indicates that while the USA has a higher overall CDR, the main risk of death from COPD may be comparable between the two countries considering their different age structures.
