Andriy, in preparing files for the laser, the main thing is not to draw the vector, but to separate the contours according to technologies. If cutting and engraving end up in the same layer, the machine operator will have to manually arrange the elements — which takes time and poses a risk of error with each batch.
What I will do essentially:
— separate DXF files for cutting: only the outer contour of the business card and holes, without unnecessary lines
— a separate SVG/AI layer for engraving: text and graphics, with the correct line thickness for raster processing
— I will trace everything from the photo manually, without auto-tracing — it gives false nodes and double contours, which turn into unnecessary cuts on metal
— layers named according to technology (cut / engrave), so the file starts immediately without questions from the operator
⚙️ A detail that is often overlooked: the minimum distance between engraving lines. If elements are placed too closely, the heat will melt the metal between them — leading to contour merging. I will set safe gaps between adjacent lines.
Preparing production files for laser equipment is my daily work. The stack is simple: CorelDRAW or Illustrator for tracing + export to DXF with a control DWG included.
I work through Safe: first, I will prepare the file for one business card and send it for review — you will run it in your program, and ensure that the layers fit correctly. Then I will prepare the second one.
