A few of these in parallel, plus bots on top - and the queue is clogged, even though the processor is almost idle. The feed for Hotline fails for the same reason: generation takes longer than the timeout. I’m betting on this, but it’s a hypothesis - I’ll confirm it through the slow log, not randomly.
I have been administering and optimizing such catalogs for over ten years. A recent example is pinger.md: an aggregator catalog with filters and a database similar in size to yours, handles the load without 504 on more modest hardware.
The plan is simple: php-fpm slow log and slow MySQL queries, raise the limits of workers and timeouts to match the actual load profile, check OPcache and object cache, analyze access logs for bots, and filter out junk traffic.
