those scanned pdf pages are classic - standard ocr always fails on low contrast and leaves weird symbols, so manual typing is the only way to keep the exact formatting. had this case where text gets split with random hyphenations at line breaks, and if you don't clean them, it looks terrible in word. i usually run a quick script to clean up these artifacts:
