I do a lot of layout work for publishers and authors for all possible platforms, and I know all the requirements.
It's better to format formulas as images, as not all glyphs (characters) are supported in e-readers; on some devices (especially older ones), they simply won't display. I have created such options where these mini-images can be resized when the user changes the font size.
But! Such work is not done in Word (I tried, and there are always many problems with layout and display in e-readers). I do the work in InDesign + Calibre.
