Essence of the book: An informational book that contains information about bail bonds in the USA: how it works, who bondsmen are, what to know if you are arrested, how to behave in court.

The essence of bail: the guarantor leaves money as collateral so that the guilty (or accused) do not go to jail.

Target audience portrait: Although the book contains legislative information, it is written for a wide range of readers - for the average American.

Book title, author:

(working, not final)

Getting and Staying Out of Jail: Bail Bonds and Release in America

Author: Sean Plotkin

Color scheme:
I am open to different solutions. But: the colors should be subdued. No more than 2-3 colors. No gradients.

What should the text-to-graphic ratio on the cover be?
More text.

What should be depicted on the cover?
Ideas, optionally:
Judge's gavel
Prison bars
Stack of dollars

Maybe the American flag.

These are all stable associations with this topic: https://www.google.com.do/search?q=bail+bond&newwindow=1&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiz2MqumYjZAhWPo1kKHZRlDeEQ_AUICigB&biw=1440&bih=826

You can use them. You can find other creative solutions.
Do not overdo it with visuals. One or two elements.

In general, I like simplicity. Textuality (so that the title and subtitle are clearly readable, becoming the main element). I like a white background.

Sizes: 5.5x8.5 inches (vertical standard book).
We are currently developing the front cover. Templates for the spread (with spine thickness) will be sent to the performer after the front design is approved.
A square version of this cover will also need to be developed.

What should definitely be avoided when creating the cover – what colors, images, concepts? Why?
I exclude: lightness, casualness, playfulness - anything frivolous and entertaining.
Also, opulence, flashiness, brightness.
I also exclude academicism. Despite the subdued tone, it should not be dry, and the book should not look like a legal tome or textbook. The book contains anecdotal sketches and is written in a "I am your friend" style. The book is aimed at the average American, so it should contain colors, graphics, but in a subdued manner.

A helper book. A guidebook.
The cover should not be too artistic or creative. It should be simple, conveying the essence of the book - informative,

In what format do you want to receive the source material?

.ai, .pdf

Additional information:

A decent option has been developed. The one with keys. It can be refined.

BUT! I am open to new solutions.

Regarding the refinement of the attached option.

There was such an idea. To convey the meaning that this book will help the reader avoid or get out of jail, it can be played out by adding prison bars:

And the gavel could be shown hitting the lock, symbolizing release.

Or simply place the bars in the background and the gavel in the foreground:

(I can't find a good image of bars that I think would fit. Here is an option, but it needs to be without hands)

And here are the gavels that can be used:

If images with rights need to be purchased, I will buy them.

BUT! I AM OPEN TO OTHER OPTIONS.

Update #1

After showing the works to the focus group, opinions were divided, and in diametrically opposite ways. Therefore, I would like to see either one approach or the other. Specifically:

1. There is a lack of warmth, a display of care. Surety is connected with helping relatives and loved ones. One part of the audience wants to see this message. Maybe even a drawing.

2. It is better to use just typography (red or orange with black) to convey the idea of confidence. Since surety is a serious matter, it is a matter of a person's life - whether they go to prison or not.
