Overview / About Me

I’m Bill Greenwood, a UK-based Adobe InDesign and Photoshop specialist with 40 years’ experience in commercial imaging and print. I began in darkrooms and moved into high-end retouching and pre-press across offset, flexo and gravure. Alongside Photoshop, InDesign and a wide range of pre-press systems, I specialise in data-driven InDesign Data Merge, turning messy spreadsheets into perfectly typeset publishing materials, ready for web or digital press.

Core Expertise

  • InDesign Data Merge (CSV/Excel/XML): single or multiple records per page, robust image linking from file paths or URLs, conditional fields, barcodes/QR codes, GREP styles and rock-solid pagination

  • Catalogue & spec-sheet templates: master pages, object styles, auto-flowing tables, anchored images and update-safe layout rules

  • Automation & scripting: ExtendScript/JSX, AppleScript and Python helpers (e.g. asset relinking, image resizing, link audits, batch exports, PDF assembly). (Note: I don’t offer standalone scripting services professionally.)

  • Print-ready PDFs & pre-press: Enfocus PitStop workflows, colour management (FOGRA 51/52L), PDF/X and clean output for digital and offset

  • High-end image retouching (including high-volume): subtle, honest improvements for fashion, lifestyle, hospitality and e-commerce—consistent skin tones, colour-matched product colourways and fast, reliable turnaround

I’m pragmatic, detail-obsessed, and I’ve taught Photoshop professionally. My approach is minimal but impactful. I’m not a designer; my skills follow the designer’s work. If the designer is the architect, I’m the builder—more of a craftsman. I get the most satisfaction from helping people solve difficult, intricate tasks.

I’m also comfortable with a wide range of pre-press, illustration and design software.

Location & comms: UK (Europe/London). Clear written updates, versioned files and tidy folders. Comfortable with NDAs.

    Pre-press troubleshooting & 5-colour print fix

    Print Design
Brought in mid-press when the printer couldn’t match proofs. Diagnosed a wrong PDF profile and GCR-heavy conversions that locked jewellery tones to the background. Rebuilt the artwork: separated images/text/gradients, introduced a 5th Pantone spot (Pantone 426 C) for the backgrounds, applied fine trapping around cut-out jewellery, and colour-matched to supplied samples. Delivered 5-colour press-ready PDFs—stable backgrounds, accurate jewellery tones, smooth print.

Role: Pre-press rescue, retouching, colour management

Problem: Wrong PDF spec + GCR conversions → excessive K; printer couldn’t control background without affecting jewellery

Solution: Convert background gradients to Pantone 426 C spot; separate black/white text as individual PDFs; isolate jewellery from backgrounds

Execution: Precise cut-outs; rebuilt noise-free gradients; fine trapping around jewellery; colour-corrected to client samples; recombined to 5C (CMYK + spot)

Output: Press-ready PDFs with clean overprint and reliable on-press control

Result: Proof-accurate print and a happy client

InDesign Data Merge 1000 unique cards from CSV

    Artwork
Built a data-driven workflow to produce 1,000 cards supporting 34 local businesses during early Covid. Each card showed all 34 names with 10 highlighted—5 fixed priority businesses per 500-card set and 5 randomly selected from the remaining 29—plus a unique order and position on every card. Delivered press-ready PDFs via Excel/LibreOffice randomisation and an InDesign master with balanced columns, anchored frames, GREP styling and Data Merge.

Brief: 1,000 cards → two sets of 500; each back lists 34 businesses; highlight 10 (5 fixed + 5 random); random order/position per card

Data prep: Excel/LibreOffice randomisation with flags; split into 8 CSVs (4×125 sheets per set) for reliability

InDesign build: single master page, 3-column balanced frame, 34 anchored text frames, paragraph styles + GREP to style/remove flags

Output: 8 documents × 125 pages → 1,000 unique backs; press-ready PDFs for digital press

Role: Data planning, automation and full production. Front design by local designer Dick Stoppels
