The money tree (Crassula or jade plant) is a succulent shrub native to southern Africa. It resembles a bonsai tree with green, fleshy leaves and thick stems that become woody with age. It is grown indoors as a money tree or friendship plant. It is believed to bring luck and prosperity.
The jade plant is not demanding regarding its placement in the house. However, it is better to keep the pot with the flower on the southern, southeastern, or northwestern side of the room. Ensure that there are no radiators or heating devices nearby. In warm weather, take it out to the balcony, terrace, or simply to the yard or gazebo in a private house. The jade plant loves fresh air but cannot tolerate drafts.
The money tree is not afraid of either sun or shade. When growing indoors, follow the advice of houseplant expert Marie Giannotti. She believes that for normal growth and flowering, the jade plant needs bright or diffused sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. If there is not enough natural light, illuminate the money tree with phytolamps.
To prevent the plant from stretching and to keep the fleshy leaves a bright green color, provide the crassula with morning sun and daytime partial shade. In hot weather, shade the plant, as direct sunlight often leads to leaf burns.
… Periodically turn the pot with the plant towards the window, alternating sides. This way, the tree will grow evenly and become slender.
Maintain a stable temperature and low humidity.
The best temperature for the jade plant in spring and summer is considered to be 20–28 °C, while in autumn and winter, it is 10–15 °C. If the jade plant is too hot or too cold, it may go dormant. In winter, move the plant as far away from radiators as possible and systematically ventilate the room, but avoid drafts and sharp temperature fluctuations. If the temperature rises during the dormancy period, the tree will lose its leaves. A drop in temperature below 0 °C can kill the plant.
The succulent plant has enough moisture reserves, so it is fine with low humidity indoors. There is no need to spray the jade plant. It is sufficient to occasionally wipe the dust off the glossy leaves to allow oxygen to reach them.
Water moderately.
Water stagnation in the soil is dangerous for the jade plant, so before watering, check how dry the soil in the pot is. Do this with a regular wooden stick. Insert it into the soil to a depth of 5 cm and leave it for 15 minutes. If the stick becomes damp and clumps of soil stick to it, it is still too early to water the crassula. Start watering when the top layer has dried out by 3–4 cm.
The money tree can live in a pot for decades. However, it rarely blooms. Only proper care and comfortable conditions will allow the owner of the jade plant to see the delicate flowers of the houseplant.
