    THE HISTORY OF ATLANTIS must differ from all other histories for the fundamental reason that it seeks to record the chronicles of a land whose soil is no longer accessible for archaeological research. If, as a result of some natural cataclysm, the Italian Peninsula were submerged under the green waters of the Mediterranean Sea in the period after the fall of Rome, we would still possess numerous documentary evidences concerning the growth and rise of the Roman Empire. At the same time, the land where this empire flourished, the substantial remnants of its civilization and architecture would be forever lost to us, except for their colonial manifestations. To a significant extent, we would be forced to draw our notions of the superiority of Latin civilization from those institutions it established in other countries, and from those traditions of it that survived in the era of its disappearance among the illiterate peoples surrounding it.
    … But however great the difficulties accompanying such an undertaking may be, they would be insignificant compared to the task of navigating through the mists of centuries in search of the outlines of chronicles and events that tell of a civilization immersed in
