Sometimes the server crashes either due to load or from a DDoS attack, so currently this is resolved by restarting the instances.
How can this process be automated, perhaps there are internal mechanisms that I am not aware of?

Should not fall from ddos. Logs on the server need to be checked. What about CPU, RAM load? For rebooting in case of failure, an ideal option is CloudWatch Alarms + AWS Lambda.
