Good day, Olga!
For your task with Binotel, I would rather suspect the problem not to be with the VPN, but one of the following reasons:
- Proton VPN cannot connect specifically to Ukrainian servers.
- RTP traffic is bypassing the VPN (split tunneling).
- The VPN is cutting or incorrectly routing UDP traffic.
- The provider or router is interfering with SIP/RTP (SIP ALG).
To quickly understand where the problem lies, you can conduct a simple test:
- Find out the external IP without the VPN.
- Connect the VPN.
- Check the IP on a site like whatismyip.
- During the call, capture a Wireshark dump and see if RTP packets are going to the Binotel addresses.
From experience, in 80-90% of similar cases, the culprits are:
- SIP ALG;
- incorrect NAT on the router itself (SIP ALG on the router);
- RTP through the VPN is not taking the correct route;
- the VPN does not allow UDP traffic completely.
If you need a Ukrainian IP specifically for telephony, the most reliable solution is to rent a VPS in Ukraine from providers like Hostpro, Cityhost, or DeltaHost and set up your own WireGuard server. This is usually more stable for SIP telephony than using public VPN services, but it also has its own features and limitations.
If you have any questions, feel free to write, and we can discuss.
