Task
Stage 1 — Diagnosis
Check the log files (
access.log,error.log) for suspicious requests.Identify infected files:
scripts with obfuscated code (
base64_decode,eval,gzinflate);external injections in
wp-config.php,index.php,header.php,functions.php;fake plugins or themes.
Check the database for malicious inserts (JS/iframe in
wp_posts,options,users).Identify all backdoors created by bot users, fake cron jobs.
Make a complete list of modified files (comparison with the original core and theme).
Stage 2 — Cleaning
Remove malicious code manually or through scanner scripts (Wordfence, ImunifyAV, ClamAV).
Reinstall the WordPress core, official plugins, and theme.
Clean the database of viral inserts, regenerate
saltsinwp-config.php.Check file permissions (755 / 644).
Remove unnecessary plugins, themes, backups in the public directory.
Check
.htaccessandwp-cronfor external calls.
Stage 3 — Protection and Prevention
Update the core, theme, plugins to the latest versions.
Install Wordfence / Sucuri / iThemes Security for monitoring.
Enable 2FA for administrators, change all passwords (FTP, MySQL, WP).
Prohibit PHP execution in
/uploads/,/wp-content/cache/,/wp-includes/.Add
.htaccessrules:restrict access to
xmlrpc.php;prohibit indexing of system directories;
allow file editing only via SSH.
Enable automatic backups (daily/weekly).
Install SSL (HTTPS) and enforce redirect.
