Serge Doubrovsky writes, “As soon as I write myself, I invent myself.” Doubrovsky coined the term ‘autofiction’ that foregrounds notions of self-discovery, individuality and subjectivity. However, many autofictional characteristics have already existed in the Anglophone world before the term had gained popularity. Currently, exploring and working on autofiction has become a vital area of research engaging with questions about identity, selfhood, and truth. Focusing on autobiographical theory in this class, we will deal with questions like: what is autofiction? How does it deal with identity and forms of representation? How does this genre affect our understanding of self-formation in literature? And how does it deal with concepts like falsehood, authenticity, and truth in narrating the self?

It is better to keep a neutral distance from such generalizations (using ‘always’) by clarifying that this is your interpretation concerning this particular text.”

- “the readers join Chris…” are you talking here about the author, or the narrator/protagonist? This is also another point that you should pay attention to. You can refer to the fact that the narrator/ protagonist has the same name and age as the author, but you cannot imply that this is the author that is described in the text. The only source of information about the story is the novel, therefore, you cannot suggest that the author is being honest or truthful in talking about her real life. This is one core element of autofiction that you’d find similarities between the narrator (and, or the protagonist) and the author, but you cannot say that they are one person. Even in autobiographies, which are supposed to be an accurate documentation of the author’s life, we can suggest that the autobiography is one possible representation (or, rather, interpretation) of how the author perceives themselves.

-It would be better to avoid using value-judgement words such as enjoyable (bad, interesting, good, boring..) because they are a matter of personal taste, not an argumentative interpretation.

-What do you mean by ‘female gaze’? it could be misleading here because of the theoretical term ‘male gaze’ that talks about something different.

-Make your main argument stand more clearly in the text by saying: I argue that/ my argument is/ In this paper, I suggest that… (Such phrases operate as guidelines for the reader to know what you mean and what you’re doing in a certain part of the text.) Afterwards you could say: to discuss my argument, I will focus on autofiction as my main theoretical framework because… and I want to examine what makes this novel a classic feminist text.

With this abstract, you already have a good beginning. Work more on the main argument and how to organize your following discussion points (theory, then main parts leading to the conclusion). Also: language-wise, your text is very well-written, which helps you convey your ideas easily.
