    Siddhartha director Christy Puyu is the most important figure of modern cinematographic Romania.It is due to him that the country at the beginning of the 21st century, not too noticeable on the map of Europe, has suddenly become one of the key exporters of films.And it all started like that.In a relatively distant year 2001, Puy, then unknown 34-year-old semi-professional, filmed and released a small-budget painting “The Goods and Money”.Criminal drama was immediately surrounded by something related to the blowing of fresh wind in the stagnant bull of the Romanian film production.She even celebrated at the Cannes Film Festival, but returned home without prestigious awards.And three years later, Puy was born with a 15-minute short film "Cigarettes and Coffee".The film, which tells about the dialogue of the father and son behind the kitchen table, attracted incredible attention both in Romania itself and far beyond it.And it’s not easy, because thanks to talented dialogues this short picture managed to cover many issues relevant to the director’s homeland.From the painful change of the communist system to the capitalist and to the domestic consumerism, the characters of the film have spoken almost the whole era.On the wave of the success of "Cigarette and Coffee", many film critics along with the usual viewers remembered "Togar and Money".The film suddenly got a second breath.People began to find in it what they hadn’t seen before, they first took to the work of Puy with sufficient seriousness.Finally, the light of the film world decided that by the efforts of this Bucharest enthusiast, the Romanian cinema finally gained its special character.Now, in 2023, there is still no unanimous opinion on what film is worth considering the point of counting the famous new wave.Some say it’s goods and money.Others tend to “Cigarettes and Coffee”, because it was the first time that the basic principles of fresh filming were implemented in this short filming work.No doubt is only one – despite the abundance of talented directors, the creator of the breakthrough moment was Christy Puy.A precise and impartial analysis of the daily life of the middle class, the tragic comicity of situations, the absence of the morality imposed by the author, the feeling of infinite self-reflection.This is the characteristic that Puy has given to each of his films.Soon this unique stylist was skillfully captured by other talented film works – Cornelius Porumbai, Radu Muntian, Christian Mungiu... Based on the experience of the famous companion, each of them brought something new to the Romanian art of cinema, forming the most unique phenomenon in the European cinema space of the 21st century.
