Essay 1. Comment on one of these quotations:

• I felt fear's echo, and along with that I felt the unhinged, uncontrollable joy which had been its accompaniment and opposite face, joy which had broken out sometimes in those days like Northern Lights across black sky. 

• It was only long after that I recognized sarcasm as the protest of people who are weak.

• There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little.

• Now I knew that there never was and never could have been any rivalry between us. I was not of the same quality as he.

• I knew of too much hate to be contained in a world like this.

• When you really love something, then it loves you back in whatever way it has to love.

Essay 2. Comment on one of these quotations:

• “I was Phineas, Phineas to the life.”

• “I did not cry even when I stood watching [Finny] being lowered into his family’s straight-laced burial ground outside of Boston. I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case.” Why would Gene feel that Finny’s funeral was his own?  

• Explain, citing examples from the novel, the following quote that describes Gene’s participation in World War II. In particular, identify what the narrator means by “his war.” What “enemy” has he killed, and how? I never killed anybody and I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because my war ended before I ever put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed my enemy there. 

Essay 3. Choose one question to answer:

• In the beginning, the adult Gene says that he can now see the great fear that he lived in while at Devon. What does he mean? What was the "convalescence" to which he referred in the beginning? 

• Trace references to "peace" throughout the story. What kinds of "peace" do the boys experience? What do you know about how the boys coped with war, after the end of the story? 

• Some have said that Finny's death feels unwarranted, others that it's necessary for the novel's logical conclusion. What do you think?

• Gene has suffered a great deal of guilt since he caused Finny to fall from the tree. Who is to blame for this second accident? Was Brinker overstepping boundaries he should not have crossed? WasLeper?
