What caused the American Civil War?

America had been living pretty peacefully for a long time… well, mostly peacefully. And then — boom! — the 19th century hit, and everything started going downhill.
(Animation of Lincoln talking to people and south states)
Abraham Lincoln wins the election. He’s like, “I think slavery is bad.” The Southern states go: “Well, we think slavery is… very convenient. We’re leaving.”

The South forms the Confederacy.
The North goes: “Hey, where are you going? Come back!”
The South: “No.”
The North: “Yes.”
The South: “No.”

In 1861 the conflict begins. And it quickly turns into total chaos. Lincoln fights to keep the country together, and little by little, the North starts winning.

And then comes the big part: he signs the Emancipation Proclamation. The South is stunned. The war drags on for four years and ends in 1865 with a Northern victory. Slavery is officially abolished.

But… that victory cost Lincoln his life: he was assassinated shortly after the war.

And that’s how America went through its biggest internal conflict to become the country we know today.
