Кроме самого шара по его поверхности должны быть расставлены булавки по GPS координатам. Булавки так же с 3D трансформацией, соеденяются лучами. Для наглядности задачи см. приложеную кртинку.
Движение шара: 1) от движения мыши / 2) при выборе одной из булавок она вместе с планетой перемещается в центр
Подробности задачи при личной беседе. Просьба отзываться только тех людей, у которых уже есть опыт с 3D моделированием для HTML5 и которые четко представляют себе как реализовать данную задачу.

В вашем примере используется Leaflet. Ранее работал с подобной ГИС API (ArcGIS JS API).
Отличный опыт программирования под OpenGL 3.3 (GLSL 3.3) и ниже под десктоп приложения. WebGL тоже самое использует только для веб браузера). Пишите в личку если необходимо будет уточнить подробности
