About the project
Development of the visual style and storyboard for a military-patriotic comic dedicated to the work of drone operators. The main task is to convey the tense atmosphere of modern high-tech warfare, combining the realism of military everyday life with the dynamics of a graphic novel.
Role: Artist-illustrator, concept artist.
Stylistics: Modern European graphic novel, clear line art with dramatic digital coloring.
Tools: Adobe Photoshop / Procreate.
Stages of work and artistic solutions
1. Atmosphere and color scheme (Frame 1)
Task: Create a strong expository frame that immerses the reader in the atmosphere without lengthy textual introductions.
Visual solution: A panoramic landscape of the front line at dawn. The central element is the silhouette of a battered ancient oak tree as a symbol of resilience and the scars of war.
Color work: A contrasting palette is used — cold, anxious blue-gray shades of the sky and trenches are contrasted with the hot flashes of orange on the horizon (symbolizing the proximity of danger and the first rays of sunlight).
2. Framing and dynamics (Frames 2–4)
Intimacy vs. scale: Transition from a vast landscape to the confined space of a bunker (Frame 2) to emphasize the operator's focus and the isolation of his work.
Emphasis on details: Use of a close-up (Frame 3) with tactile detail — a hand on the joystick of the controller. This creates a sense of presence and concentrates the tension before the action.
Climax of the scene: An action frame (Frame 4) with dynamic blur of the drone's blades, symbolizing a rapid exit into the working space.
Result
A cohesive visual concept for the first page of the comic has been created, demonstrating the ability to work with composition, light and shadow, text blocks (bubbles), and maintain the tempo of the narrative. The project is ready for further scaling and detailing.
