Challenges of Translating Cultural Idioms from English to Other Languages
Abstract
The article is dedicated to analyzing the challenges that arise when translating cultural idioms from English to other languages, particularly to Ukrainian. The work examines the main difficulties faced by translators, such as preserving the emotional and cultural context of idioms, as well as adapting them to the socio-cultural realities of the target language. Special attention is paid to the significance of idioms as socio-cultural phenomena that reflect historical and social aspects of culture. Various approaches to translating idioms are studied, including calque, adaptation, and descriptive translation, as well as the role of emotional load in conveying meaning. Based on scientific sources, such as the works of Levytsky M. V., Smoliy I., and Johnson E., methods that allow for the preservation of translation accuracy while conveying psychological and cultural context are analyzed. As a result of the study, it is concluded that the translation of cultural idioms is a complex and important process that requires deep knowledge and sensitivity to the cultural peculiarities of the language.
