У старого була дочка-красуня, жив він з нею тихо і мирно, поки не одружився з іншою бабі, а та баба була зла відьма.

Злюбила вона падчерку, пристала до старого:

… - Прожени її з дому, щоб я її і в очі не бачила.

Старий узяв та й видав свою дочку заміж. Живе вона з чоловіком та радіє, і народився у них хлопчик.

А відьма ще пущі злиться, заздрість їй спокою не дає; улучила вона час, звернула свою пасербицю звіром Арись-поле і вигнала в дрімучий ліс, а в падчеріцино плаття одягла свою рідну дочку і підставила її замість дідової дочки.

Так все хитро зробила, що ні чоловік, ні люди - ніхто обману не помітив.

Тільки стара мамка одна і збагнула, а сказати боїться.

З того самого дня, як тільки дитина зголодніє, мамка понесе його до лісу і заспіває:

- Арись - поле! Дитя кричить,

Дитя кричить, пити-їсти хоче.

Арись - поле прибіжить, скине свою шкурку під колоду, візьме хлопчика, нагодує; після одягне знову шкурку і піде в ліс.

«Куди це мамка з дитиною ходить? »- думає батько.

Став за нею доглядати і побачив, як Арись-поле прибігла, скинула з себе шкурку, стала годувати крихітку.

Батько підкрався з-за кущів, схопив шкурку і спалив її.

- Ах, щось димом пахне; ніяк, моя шкурка горить! - каже Арись-поле.

- Ні, - відповідає мамка, - це, мабуть, дроворуби ліс підпалили.

Шкурка згоріла, Арись - поле прийняла колишній вигляд і розповіла все чоловікові.

І зібралось люди, схопили відьму і прогнали її разом з її дочкою.
