Christian stood on a huge black field that was once fire. The lava had long cooled, but underfoot was not stone. It was something like a soft, springy carpet. What was it? Christian knew - this famous Icelandic moss. It was bright green, fluffy, as if someone had spread a thousand blankets here.

The boy crouched down and ran his hand over the moss. It was cold and slightly damp, even when the sun was shining. Suddenly, a voice was heard from the side. It said, "Don't step on the moss too hard, it grows very slowly. Sometimes just a little bit a year."

Christian smiled and tried to imagine how this field had grown even before his grandparents were born. Suddenly, the wind stirred the moss, and it seemed that something moved beneath it. A tiny silver light flickered between the clumps. The boy froze, waiting to see what would happen next.

A tiny little man peeked out from under the moss. He was literally the size of a palm. He had a sharp little hat made of a leaf and eyes like two drops of dew. When he spoke, Christian realized that it was indeed his voice. It was thin, like the whistle of the wind between the rocks.

"We live here. The moss is our home and our roof. Don't tear it, and we will show you where the softest places are to jump like on a trampoline. And we also heal with it if someone among us is sick. If you listen to me, you will learn everything."

Christian nodded to the little man. He smiled in response, waved his hand, and disappeared back under the green carpet. The moss lay quietly again, but now the boy knew for sure: this was not just grass. It was alive. And beneath it, someone was there.
