45 USD It all started unnoticed. The site was working as usual, but there was a strange inertia in the admin panel: the settings pages opened with a pause, as if someone had pressed the brakes. The publication editor was hanging on saving drafts, sometimes throwing a "timeout," and it was necessary to press "Refresh" several times. That same day, in the "Comments" section, an endless stream of messages in English appeared — meaningless phrases, random emojis, strange links to pharmacies and "discounts." They all seemed to be from different people, but felt like they were written by one hand.
The hosting soon sent a warning: CPU load was spiking, the number of requests exceeded normal values by several times. The logs showed waves of requests to xmlrpc.php and to random REST endpoints. At night, when there were almost no visitors, the graphs still spiked upwards — as if the site was continuously responding to someone. Several pages suddenly started opening twice as long, sometimes returning 404 on the first try, and on the second — they loaded, but the footer flickered with externally loaded scripts that no one had seen before.
In Google search, unfamiliar subtitles with hieroglyphs occasionally appeared next to the site name. Several URLs that no one had created were already being indexed — clone pages with someone else's words and loud discounts. In Search Console, warnings about atypical content and sharp jumps in the number of pages in the index popped up. At the same time, refusals about undelivered emails from the domain started arriving in the mail — as if the site was trying to send thousands of messages somewhere into the void.
