На Ubuntu. Виртуальные хосты не настраивал, но в инструкции написано, что сайт должен открыться по адресу сервера.

Слишком скудное описание, но так на вскидку: локалхост будет открыватся только в браузере на тойже машине. На то он и локалхост. Если вы хотите видеть свой сайт из внешнего мира вам нужно как минимум зайти по айпи, с тем же портом, а вообще, по серьёзному то поднять настоящий сервер, апачь или энжиникс.

Это сервер для тестирования. Я первый раз настраиваю подобное и хочу научиться. -

та для фронта вам не нужен сервер. На локальной машине все подымется!

localhost:3000 это для прогера, который работает локально и хочет видеть результат уже. Без локалхоста, например, не будут работать аякс запросы итд.
На тестовом сервере куда важнее поднять бэкэнд, базу, АПИ итп.
