I understood the task: the SaaS web application needs to be tested end-to-end, covering what can be covered with automated tests, and for the rest — checklists and test plans, your estimated time ~20-30 hours.
Approach to work for effectively fitting into 20-30 hours.
The first stage (4-6 hours) — exploratory testing plus inventory of features. I will go through the SaaS as a user based on main scenarios (signup, main workflow, billing, settings), while simultaneously documenting all screens, forms, and edge cases in Notion/Sheets. The notes will turn into the initial test plan, which we will agree on before the automated tests. At this stage, I will also compile a bug report on what I find (separate from the automated test plans).
The second stage (10-14 hours) — automated tests on the critical path. The default stack for SaaS — Playwright (Python or TypeScript of your choice) for UI end-to-end, pytest for backend if there is an open API, plus the page-object pattern to make the tests maintainable. Coverage will primarily focus on the auth flow, main business workflow, payment/billing if applicable, and critical forms. A smoke suite — a separate set for ~5 minutes of execution, which can be integrated into CI on each push.
The third stage (5-8 hours) — checklists for what cannot be automated (visual regression without Percy/Chromatic, UX flows, mobile responsiveness, specific logic that requires setup) and a final report — what is covered, what coverage is achieved, what remains manual, recommendations for further development of the test suite.
Artifacts produced. A repository with tests (either in your repo or a separate package), a README with instructions for running, CI config (GitHub Actions / GitLab CI) if you use it, and a bug report on the issues found in Notion/Jira/just markdown.
What is important to understand before starting. The stack of your SaaS (if the backend is in Python — I can also connect to the unit/integration test layer), whether specific browsers/devices need to be tested (Chrome, Firefox, Safari mobile), and if there are already any tests in the repo (if yes — I will extend the existing ones, not write from scratch). I am ready to start after your responses.
Relevant experience — on one of my projects, I maintain a test suite with 1090+ automated tests and 72% coverage, and for freelance, I created a commercial trading bot with 173 passing tests and full documentation. I work with pytest and Playwright in production constantly.
