After the murder of Mrs. Irina, a thought rushed through my head like a whirlwind - take in hand and to mind Khvylovy. Why him? I don’t know… Perhaps because both geniuses died from bullets in their temples? Only Mr. Mykola from his own hand… Should we look for some symbolism here? The foolishness of my head, surely. But not about that.
The story "Sanatorium Zone" reminded me of something that made me write the 100th point of the importance of the Ukrainian language.
So, the event unfolds in a sanatorium with "God's Free Ones." You guess their state through the described twists and turns, not in plain text. The residents are either being treated there or resting, it is initially unclear. The dialogues, monologues are constructed in such a way that it is hard to understand where reality is and where the fruit of a sick imagination is. With each chapter you read, you think that you will catch the climax by the tail, but no. And this makes the resolution more unpredictable.
Doesn't it remind you of anything?
2010, the film "Shutter Island" was released, starring the famous DiCaprio.
2003. Denis Ligain published a novel, which is called, what do you think? "Shutter Island."
… 1924. Mykola Khvylovy writes the story "Sanatorium Zone." Nine years will pass and he will end his life by suicide, due to the arrest of Yalovy as a sign of protest against the beginning of mass repressions of the Ukrainian intelligentsia.
So, what do I want to say with this? You might think, what does an American film have to do with a writer of the shot revival? It has to do with the fact that the genius of the Ukrainian word existed long before today's masterpieces of world cinema and literature. It is hard to imagine how much was lost due to the persecution and oppression of all the authors of that time. Execution, exile, prohibition, slavery. Because the Muscovites fear the Ukrainian language, its genius, which is centuries ahead of its time, because they are nothing compared to us. And therefore fear breeds hatred.
