Задача:
Определение подключенного клиента.
Схема и алгоритм:
1. Написать JS скрипт вебсокет клиент, который будет соединятся по вебсокету с сервером.
2. Написать серверный PHP скрипт или использовать Ratchet который будет выполнять роль сервера.
3. Написать PHP скрипт с использованием вебсокет клиента, подав на который запрос можно получить ответ о том подключен ли клиент в данный момент к серверу.
Идентификация клиента: login или ник который состоит с email
Клиентов может быть много, нужно проверять конкретно, подключен или нет передав в запросе логин.

ну наверное потому что нужно через Вебсокет а не Аякс.
