At what stage of renovation should you order and install interior doors?

People who have experienced renovation strongly recommend controlling crucial moments. Even if you have completely entrusted it to a team of builders working on a "turnkey" basis. One of these moments is the installation of interior doors. It's not just about choosing the design of the door leaf. When measurements and installation were carried out, the final result is influenced no less than by the installation itself.

So, what is the main problem?

Builders and installers have radically different opinions on when to install interior doors

In most cases, finishing craftsmen insist on installing at least the door frame before the start of plastering works. Their logic is clear:

• Interior doors should be installed level. All flaws in plaster - bumps, hollows, vertical misalignments - will immediately become visible.
• The leveled frame can be used as a guide.

To preserve them, they promise to protect the front surface with film, painter's tape.

So what does the customer get in most cases? In most cases - a spoiled exterior:

• Construction mixtures can penetrate even through the film, especially near the edges. Those who have tried to wash off dried putty or primer at least once know well: it's not easy to wipe it off. Residual traces will be particularly noticeable on dark surfaces.
• If an incompetent master uses the frame as a guide, it will damage it. Do not doubt it.
• The interior door frame is made of MDF. PVC coating does not protect the entire surface. MDF is sensitive to prolonged exposure to increased humidity, which is inevitable during finishing works. The result - the frame will warp.

But most importantly: none of the above problems is a warranty case.

Builders' request to install doors before plastering works or tiling is an attempt to hide their low qualifications.

Not only installation, but also measuring openings for interior doors should be done after completing the main construction and finishing works

Manufacturers of interior doors and specialized installation teams, based on years of experience, recommend ordering interior doors:

• After finishing plastering and laying tiles - this way the wall thickness will be accurately known, and therefore, the dimensions of the openings.
• After laying the finishing floor covering - in this case, the optimal gap between the floor and the door leaf will be maintained in structures without thresholds, the threshold will not be lower than the floor level. The leaf and frame will be made to the required height immediately. It will not need to be cut.

It takes about two weeks on average to manufacture a set of interior doors. During this time, the walls in the apartment or house will be painted or wallpapered.

Installation of interior doors - the final stage of renovation

This is an operation with a minimal amount of debris and dust. Experienced masters will not harm the finishing of walls, floors, and ceilings:

• Ideally, if there are wallpapers on the walls already. Then the team will do everything necessary in one visit. Up to installing architraves.
• Neat junction zones between the floor covering and the frame will be formed - without gaps. This is especially important when laying laminate or parquet. 

Installation of interior doors before wallpapering is allowed. But the architraves should still be installed afterwards.

A separate issue is stretch ceilings. They are most often installed after wallpapering the walls. The technological process involves intense heating of the room with gas heat guns. The PVC film used for finishing interior doors is not resistant to prolonged exposure to high (over 60 degrees) temperatures. Therefore, in this case, the installation of interior doors also remains last.
