Есть большой опыт с WordPress, специализируюсь на нем.
Настраивал мультисайты не раз для себя и клиентов.
Очень удобная вещь, если использовать по назначению.
Все, что вы описали поддерживается из коробки, кроме публикаций.
Уточните, что вы имеете в виду по поводу общей категории публикаций, ведь сайты будут на разных доменах, скорее всего, или как минимум с разными поддиректориями, каким образом у них могут быть общие публикации? Разве что делать дублированный контент с разными адресами, но это плохо для сео. Словом, напишите подробнее, пожалуйста.

"Лучше не надо" - по мне, так самая честная консультация.
Я имею ввиду, что мультисайтовость в вордпрессе вроде как и работает, но слишком много деталей, которіе делают єту работу крайне неудобной, и не надёжной.
Лучше для каждого сайта исползовать отдельный WordPress.
