I have already conducted similar audits and always start by getting a complete picture of how the system behaves in practice, not just in code.
By checking the structure and flow, I can point out parts that slow down performance, create risks, or simply seem outdated.
If there is no clear separation of logic and interface in the system, I would suggest breaking it into cleaner modules step by step. I would also look for places where modern tools can be safely replaced without rewriting everything at once.
Security gaps, unused code, and fragile database queries are usually quickly identified during my review.
