Кстати, для тестов неплохо бы ещё тестовый сайтег поднять у себя на ПК на том же Apache. =)

Пользуюсь OpenServer, скачал, установил, забыл! Тут главное js и html нужно знать ))

Уточните:
• материалы/текстуры для моделей нужны?
• требуется ли от плеера какой-либо дополнительный функционал помимо вращения/ масштабирования?

Текстуры на примере есть - потому делаю логический вывод, что таки да - нужны.

Впрочем, вопрос по форматам снимается. Это GLTFLoader, ему предпочтительней всего скармливать glTF (GL Transmission Format). Но можно и просто сетки OBJ...
