Technical assignment

Project: CAD design of a barn for the hydroponic farm "Rutland Greens"
Goal: Creation of an accurate technical project for the conversion of the barn into a flagship microgreens growing farm (≈500 trays). The project should be ready for implementation and scaling for future facilities.

1. Initial data

• Barn dimensions: 5.9 m (length) × 5.3 m (width) × 3.8 m (clear height).

• Condition: one-story, concrete floor, wooden frame, double doors, uninsulated walls and roof.

• Required finishing works: insulation with PIR panels, vapor barrier, PVC panel cladding, epoxy floor, sealing of doors.

2. Zonal planning

• Preparation area (left wall, 0.9 m):

  • 2 × stainless steel tables 2.5–3 m with shelves;

  • sink with a rim and faucet;

  • upper shelves.

• Growing area (center, ~4.3 m):

  • 3 aisles × 2 racks in a row = 6 racks;

  • rack: 2.4 m (length) × 0.6 m (depth) × 3.4 m (height), 12 levels;

  • capacity: 96 trays per rack (total ~576 trays);

  • aisles: 60 cm between racks, ≥76 cm central aisle;

  • access: ladders/movable stairs.

• Harvesting area (back, 0.9–1.2 m):

  • stainless steel work table (3 m);

  • packing racks;

  • weighing and sealing area;

  • drainage trough.

3. Engineering systems

3.1. Irrigation and plumbing

• 2 tanks 150–200 gal. (1.2 × 1.2 m);

• submersible pumps + spare;

• manifold: 1″ main → ¾″ lines to racks → ½″ to levels;

• trays with drainage;

• solenoid valves (36 pcs.);

3.2. Climate control

• Split system 12–18k BTU;

• Dehumidifier 50–70 l/day with drainage;

• Exhaust fan 150–200 mm;

• Filtered air intake;

• 6 circulation fans;

• CO₂ sensors.

3.3. Lighting

• LED bars 120 cm, 40–50 W, full spectrum;

• 288 pcs. (4 per level × 12 levels × 6 racks);

• drivers on top of racks;

• dimmable lines along aisles.

3.4. Electrical and automation

• Sub-panel: 6 × 20A (light), 1 × 20A (pumps/controllers), 1 × HVAC;

• Cable trays along the ceiling, vertical drops;

• Automation cabinet (DIN rail, relays/PLC, power supplies);

• Sensors: temperature, humidity, CO₂, water level, leaks;

• IP cameras (2–3 pcs., PoE);

• Network: Cat6 + PoE switch;

• Growlink controllers or similar (with cloud management).

4. Finishing and construction

• PIR insulation: 100 mm walls, 120 mm ceiling;

• PVC panels, sealed joints;

• Floor – epoxy resin with skirting;

• Insulated doors with seals.

5. Required drawings and documents

1. 2D layout: zones, dimensions, aisles.

2. Rack sections: 12 levels, trays, lighting, irrigation.

3. Ceiling plan (RCP): light, cable routes, HVAC.

4. Plumbing diagram: tanks, pumps, manifolds, drainage.

5. Electrical diagram: sub-panel, lines, control cabinet.

6. Ventilation: HVAC, exhaust, intake, air flow diagram.

7. 3D visualization: complete interior with zones and equipment. (3D NOT REQUIRED FOR NOW)

8. CAD file with layers: A-SHELL, A-PREP, A-GROW, A-RACK, A-LED, A-IRR, A-CTRL, A-POWER, A-DATA, etc.

9. MEP coordination documentation (mechanics, electrical, plumbing).

10. Note on scaling: possibility to add a 4th row of racks or a mezzanine.
