The idea for this book was born from a simple question: why do we keep losing effectiveness even though we know dozens of management approaches? Why do we continue putting out fires although, in theory, we already know where the matches are hidden?
One day, my colleague — a long-time friend and fellow C-level executive — and I were sitting in a café trying to recall all the management frameworks we had encountered over twenty-five years of work. A long list quickly appeared on a sheet of paper:

• Deming’s management cycle
• Shewhart’s process model
• Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints
• Adizes’ corporate lifecycle model
• the Balanced Scorecard (BSC)
• Lean, Total Quality Management (TQM), Six Sigma, Just-in-Time (JIT), OKR, Kaizen, the DuPont matrix, Loss Prevention…
By the time we reached fifty, we stopped and stared at the list. And that was just the tip of the iceberg.
Each of these methodologies is valuable in its own way. Each has helped us move forward and solve difficult problems at different points in our careers. Yet we kept asking ourselves: why, with such an arsenal of knowledge and practical experience, do we still find ourselves searching for “one more method” — the one we believe we are missing right now?
